(AP) New forms of synthetically sweetened cocaine has been discovered in California by federal drug agents who hope to stop its development before it becomes available to other parts of the nation.

Drug agents said the new product was more sophisticated than previous forms that attempted to mix cocaine with powdered candy.

The previous form was cut with extra flavoring, thus making it less potent, but the amount seized last week was full-strength, investigators say. Flavors included strawberry, coconut, lemon and cinnamon.

Drug Enforcement Agents discovered the 1.5 pounds of synthetically sweetened cocaine in two homes in Modesto, Calif. The drugs would earn $1,100 to $1,400 an ounce on the street, compared to regular cocaine, which sells for $600 to $700 an ounce, they said.

Gordon Taylor, the DEA’s assistant special agent in charge of the investigation, said the possibility of a candy-flavored cocaine epidemic would be extremely dangerous to children and teenagers. He said that law enforcement agencies must work with each other to end any attempt to expand the drug in other markets.

“Attempting to lure new, younger customers to a dangerous drug by adding candy flavors is an unconscionable marketing technique,” Taylor said.

Dealers of powder and rock cocaine have used other methods such as dying the drug in order to conceal it for transport. In February, Police in Virginia arrested a New Jersey man who possessed 4.5 pounds of cocaine concealed in lollipop, chocolate and toffee wrappers.

However, last month’s discovery of a new strain of flavored cocaine is reportedly the first in the nation.

Last year, strawberry-flavored methamphetamines were discovered reaching from California to as far as Virginia.

“Meth has sort of a bitter, nasty taste, so it’s kind of easy for the young kids to get into this,” said Henry Spiller, director of the Kentucky Regional Poison Center in Louisville. “It’s an effort to make meth more appealing.”

An undercover narcotics officer in Benton County, Ark. Said that flavored meth seemed to move quickly across the US.

“It seems like everyone we run into knows someone that has at least been affected by it,” he said.

“Unfortunately, I’ve seen a lot of young people, from teenagers to 20-somethings, doing the drug. It's definitely something that’s real dangerous.”

Psychologist Sean O’Hara is an addictive-diseases specialist in San Diego. He said that not only do the drugs attract children, they also tend to make them believe they are less dangerous.

“They think if they’re getting something that has color in it or is sweet to the taste because it’s been cut with sugar or Jell-O and had other chemicals added to it ... it seems like it’s a less-threatening drug,” O’Hara said.

Authorities are urging parents to watch closely for any sign of the new drugs.

“If parents see a colored powder or sweet-smelling powder not in a factory package, I would pay real close attention to it,” said Hatfield of the Cathedral City police.

Sports: New York Nixes Isaiah!

The death knell sounded Friday for Isiah Thomas' career with the New York Knicks. Although he will remain within the organization, the former Detroit Pistons point guard was fired as coach of the team following a tumultuous season on and off the court.
"It's very difficult to be the coach and general manager," said Thomas, according to the Associated Press. "Maybe it was too much."
Thomas, who also was team president a little more than two weeks ago, will now report directly to new president Donnie Walsh. One of Walsh's first decisions after officially replacing Thomas on April 2 was to change coaches as he begins the process of turning around a team that never won a playoff game in Thomas' tenure.
"I just believe a new voice, a new coach, is necessary to change the direction of the team," Walsh said. "This is a coveted job. People want to coach here."
The Knicks finished 23-59, matching the franchise record for losses, in their seventh straight losing season. Thomas was found to have sexually harassed a former team employee, feuded with point guard Stephon Marbury and benched center Eddy Curry. Also, the players Thomas acquired in the two biggest of a number of moves that never panned out.
Walsh wants a new coach in place by the draft in June. He hasn't talked to any candidates, but mentioned former Knick and current TV analyst Mark Jackson, and assistant coach Herb Williams as people who likely would be interviewed.

DUH?! BET, MTV ASSAULT KIDS ONCE EVERY 38 SECONDS: New study says adult content between the two channels runs rampant!

A new study of daytime music video programming on BET and MTV found that teen viewers are bombarded with sexual, violent, profane or obscene images once every 38 seconds.
“What BET and MTV are offering to children on these three programs is full of offensive and vulgar content, the likes of which cannot yet be found on broadcast television," said Tim Winter. President of the Parents Television Council, who conducted the study in partnership with the Enough is Enough Campaign.
In the study, PTC analyzed the adult content airing during afternoon or early evening hours on BET’s "Rap City" and "106 & Park" and on MTV’s "Sucker Free" for a two-week period in December 2007. The shows were chosen for their daily new and recent video releases.
Because the research data from the December content contained a strikingly high volume and degree of adult-themed material, the PTC conducted an additional week of analysis on the same three programs in March 2008 for purposes of validation. The data revealed even higher levels of adult content in March 2008 than in December 2007.
“BET and MTV are assaulting children with content that is full of sexually charged images, explicit language, portrayals of violence, drug use, drug sales and other illegal activity," said Winter. "Not only that, but we discovered that some offensive words aired only in muted form in December 2007, but as recent as March 2008, these same words were not muted.
“Excluding one program on BET, neither BET nor MTV carried content descriptors that would work in conjunction with the V-Chip to block the programs from coming into the home or to warn parents about the presence of sexual content, suggestive dialogue, violence, or foul language. This is a major problem for parents who are told repeatedly to rely on their V-chips to protect their children,” said Winter.

KRS ONE HIT BY FLYING BOTTLE AT PEACE CONCERT: Rapper rushed to hospital with fractured hand.

Things got a little violent at a " Stop the Violence" concert featuring KRS-One recently when someone in the crowd threw a bottle on stage, hitting the rapper in the face and hand, reports Allhiphop.com.
The rap legend was performing at a nightclub in New Haven, CT when a concert-goer became upset with security staff who had escorted him off stage and tossed the bottle in reaction.

After his right hand swelled up and became painful during the last 15 minutes of his set, the rapper was rushed by ambulance to Yale-New Haven hospital and treated for a fractured hand and dehydration. Doctors urged the artist to postpone all previously scheduled appearances until he recovers from both ailments.

I don't condone violence of any kind, and it was absolutely wrong for somebody to throw a bottle at him. However, I can say that I relieved that his concert was cut short, escpecially with spewing all that 5% nation of god's and earths and Temple of Hip-Hop foolishness.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 22-year-old man is accused of balling up pieces of bread and trying to sell them as crack cocaine to senior citizens in a Florida nursing home.

Investigators said Hillmon Arnold tried to sell the fake cocaine at the Golden Retreat Center on Moncrief Road.

“He was trying to sell these pieces of crack for $5 apiece to these elderly citizens and, clearly, trying to take advantage of them because he knew they received their checks on the 10th of every month,” JSO spokeswoman Melissa Bujeda said.

Police said Arnold ran when officers approached him in the parking lot of the facility.

When officers caught up with him, they said they found a pill bottle in this waistband that contained seven or eight aspirin and something that looked like a rock of crack cocaine — but it wasn’t, WJXT reported.

“He actually admitted he was trying to sell artificial crack cocaine to support his own drug habit,” Bujeda said.

Even though what he was selling was not an illegal substance, he was still breaking a law: sale/manufacture/delivery or possession of a counterfeit control substance — a third-degree felony.

“Because the person on the other end has no idea that it’s fake or real, so whether you’re attempting to sell a fake or real drug, when you’re trying to sell that and you are leading the person to believe it’s a real drug, you’re just as guilty,” Bujeda said.

n addition to the counterfeit drug charge, Arnold was also charged with resisting arrest without violence. He was booked into the Duval County jail and held on $52,506 bond.
