Sign of The Times: Artist Builds Temple of Science

At a time when the gulf between religion and science is growing ever greater, an artist has erected a temple for scientific worship.

Jonathon Keats, designer of the petri dish God, built The Atheon to get people thinking about what a scientific religion (or religious science?) would look and feel like.

Keats' conception of that idea took shape as a two-story building complete with stained-glass windows patterned after cosmic microwave background radiation and a liturgy based on the sounds of the Big Bang. The Atheon opened Sept. 27 at the Judah L. Magnes Museum in Berkeley, California.

But, could science replace religion?

The question has intrigued both rationalists frustrated at the persistence of what they see as superstitious dogma, and religious believers — as well as all-purpose skeptics — unwilling to promote science, with its mixed and messy history, to a position of absolute authority.

Keats doesn't claim to take sides, but says he just wants to give people a chance to think. In December, he'll host a public discussion at the Atheon, with people invited to bring their own models. "It's important that this Atheon not be seen as the only model. It's one possibility. The best thing would be for people to engage these questions, and consider what form religion could take as science."

CNN) — By 2050, minorities will be the majority in America, and the number of residents older than 65 will more than double, according to projections released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Minorities, classified as those of any race other than non-Hispanic, single-race whites, currently constitute about a third of the U.S. population, according to Census figures. But by 2042, they are projected to become the majority, making up more than half the population. By 2050, 54 percent of the population will be minorities.

Minority children are projected to reach that milestone even sooner. By 2023, the bureau said, more than half of all children will be minorities.

“Part of it is a higher fertility rate for some of the minority groups, Hispanics in particular,” said Dave Waddington, chief of the Census Bureau’s population projection branch, which issued the report. “Those groups also tend to be more of the childbearing age. Non-Hispanic white people tend to be a little bit older.”

The projections are based on Census 2000 results and assumptions about future childbearing, mortality rates and net international migration, the bureau said.

The group predicted to post the most dramatic gain is the Hispanic population. It is projected to nearly triple, from 46.7 million to 132.8 million, from 2008 through 2050, the bureau said. Its share of the total U.S. population is expected to double from 15 to 30 percent. “Thus, one in three U.S. residents would be Hispanic,” the Census Bureau said in a news release.

The African-American population is projected to increase from 41.1 million to 65.7 million by 2050, going from 14 percent of the U.S. population to 15 percent.

The Asian-American population is expected to increase from 15.5 million to 40.6 million, or from 5.1 percent to 9.2 percent of the population.

Among the remaining races, the bureau said, American Indians and Alaska natives are projected to increase from 3.9 million to 8.6 million, going from 1.6 percent to 2 percent of the U.S. population. Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders are expected to more than double, increasing from 1.1 to 2.6 million.

In addition, the number of U.S. residents identifying themselves as being of two or more races is projected to more than triple, increasing to 16.2 million from its current 5.2 million, the Census Bureau said.

Meanwhile, the non-Hispanic white population is not expected to post dramatic gains in the same period. By 2050, whites are expected to number 203.3 million, slightly increased from the 2008 number of 199.8 million. Whites will comprise 46 percent of the U.S. population by 2050, down from the current level of 66 percent, the bureau said, as the group is projected to lose population in the 2030s and 2040s.

I was waiting for a valid source to confirm this here before I posted it and that it has. Will Smith has confirmed what everybody has suspected for several years now about he and Jada’s “open marriage”. In an interview with UK magazine Reveal, Willy himself has confirmed that he and Jada ask for each other’s approval before they have sex with other people. And I quote:

“Our perspective is, you don’t avoid what’s natural and you’re going to be attracted to people.” he says.

“And if it came down to it, then one would say to the other: ‘Look, I need to have sex with somebody. Now, I’m not going to if you don’t approve of it’.”

The 39-year-old star explains that the couple’s open policy has been in place from day one of their 10-year marriage.

“In our marriage vows, we didn’t say ‘forsaking all others’. We said ‘you will never hear I did something afterwards’. Because if that happens the relationship is destroyed.”

The War Is Still Going On: And Our Young Adults Are Still Dying & Getting Injured

When JFK said “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” I can’t believe he intended for the young African-American man pictured above to have to go through all of what he went through.
Sgt. Merlin German was hit with a road side bomb in Iraq which burned over 97% of his body when he was only 19, and required him to undergo over 100 surgeries and procedures. He would have to learn to live with the stranger staring back at him in the mirror. I could only imagine the strength it must take to be able to smile, laugh and joke after going through all of that in 3 years.
It’s a pain that never stops, a pain that is both physical and emotional. And as fact after fact, come out that this war was wrong, and nothing more than Bush’s way of stealing a country oil, I’m sure the pain could be unbearable. Sadly, when it seemed he would defy impossible odds, Sgt. Merlin German lost his last battle this spring — an unexpected final chapter in a story many imagined would have a happy ending.
MSNBC has a wonderful article on him, the miracle marine. This man could be your brother, your son, or your boyfriend. I take this picture as a reminder that he won’t get to read one of my cinderella blogs, He won’t get to hear the new Lil Wayne album or experience what it’s like to ride that new roller coaster the closest six flags unveiled this summer.
So the least we can do is pay attention, pay attention as this administration is trying to do the exact same thing again to Iran that it did to Iraq. This our current president has lied to us time after time again. That numerous whites have spewed racial slurs and ideologies and most blacks have turned a blind eye to it. The least we can do is pay attention to more that what happens in our own community, when our kids are dying in this war too.

Allowing the creation of human-animal hybrid embryos would make the UK a scientific "rogue state", MPs have been warned as a fierce debate opened on highly-controversial new laws.

Gordon Brown and David Cameron have both firmly backed the ground-breaking technique as a means to develop treatments for common conditions that could potentially save millions of lives.

The Prime Minister and Tory leader also support the creation of "saviour siblings" selected by parents in order to provide tissue material for seriously ill children.

Mr Brown has hailed both innovations as "an inherently moral endeavour". But opponents from all parties hope to unite to axe both from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill in crunch Commons votes on Monday evening.

And with MPs allowed to vote according to personal conscience, not the party line, on the most contentious elements of the Bill, the result is not predictable.

Leading the fight against so-called "admixed embryos", Tory MP Edward Leigh said the technique, which involves implanting a human nucleus inside an animal cell, was "a step too far".

Scientists believe that stem cells harvested from these embryos could provide the key to breakthroughs in the treatment of conditions such as Parkinson's disease, cystic fibrosis or muscular dystrophy. Research is currently being held up by the shortage of human eggs to create stem cells.

But critics of hybrids have branded them "Frankenstein science", saying it is obscene to combine human and animal genetics. They also question the benefits, insisting other methods are more effective.

But Mr Leigh said 21 other countries had banned the creation of hybrids. "In terms of embryonic research we will almost be like a rogue state," he warned.

But Labour MP Chris Bryant, a former Anglican curate, compared Mr Leigh's arguments to those used by church leaders against the smallpox vaccine. He said: "They were wrong and I think you are wrong today."

NEWARK (CBS) ― Two men fatally shot each other after they brawled in Newark on Saturday afternoon.

The incident began around 2 p.m., said Det. Todd McClendon, a Newark police spokesman.

Police did not confirm what sparked the brawl, but identified the victims as 16-year-old Bashir Davis and 28-year-old Jaronne Culver. They say there was a fight over turf, and may have involved a third man who fled in a car.

One of the weapons used was an uzi, but whether the firearm was semiautomatic or fully automatic was not immediately known.

"I know both of them both of them," said Newark resident Amani Shakur. Both are generally good guys. I don't know what happened."

McClendon said one man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where he died a short time later.

There have now been 22 homicides in Newark this year, compared to 31 that had occurred by this time last year.
