COP STOPS NFL'S RYAN MOAT'S FAMILY FROM SEEING DYING MOM: Dallas police chief apologizes for officer's behavior; family believes race was a factor.

*Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle apologized Wednesday for the behavior of an officer who stopped a family outside a hospital emergency room, reports WFAA-TV.

Officer Robert Powell has been placed on paid administrative leave in connection with an incident last week in which he stopped the family rushing to visit a dying mother, detaining them for 13 minutes to write a traffic ticket.

“His behavior, in my opinion, did not exhibit the common sense, discretion, the compassion that we expect our officers to exhibit,” the chief said during a press conference.

During the traffic stop, caught on the officer’s in-car camera, Powell berated the driver, ex-Philadelphia Eagles and now Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats, 26, and threatened him with arrest for running a traffic light.

“I can screw you over,” said Powell, 25. “I’d rather not do that.”

Kunkle appeared to bite his tongue a bit when expressing regret over the officer's actions.

“When we in the command staff reviewed the tapes,” he said, “we were embarrassed, disappointed — it’s hard to find the right words and still be professional in my role as a police chief.”

Moats rolled through a red light as he and his wife were en route to Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano. A Dallas police squad car pulled their SUV over near the hospital's emergency entrance and drew his gun. Moats and his wife begged the officer to let them hurry on to her mother's bedside.

“You really want to go through this right now?” Moats pleaded. “My mother-in-law is dying. Right now!”

His wife, Tamishia Moats, ignored the cop and ran into the hospital with her great-aunt. Tamishia's mother, Jonetta Collinsworth, was struggling at 45 with breast cancer that had spread throughout her body. Family members rushed to her bedside from as far away as California.

Ryan Moats, who stayed behind with the father of the dying woman, said Powell also pointed his gun at him. He said he put his hands on the car because he was afraid that he might get shot. He tried to explain the situation to the officer.

“I waited until no traffic was coming,” Moats told Powell, explaining his passage through the red light. “I got seconds before she’s gone, man.”

Powell demanded his license and proof of insurance. Moats produced his license but said he didn’t know where the insurance paperwork was.

“Just give me a ticket or whatever,” he said, beginning to sound exasperated and a little argumentative.

“Shut your mouth,” Powell told him. “You can cooperate and settle down, or I can just take you to jail for running a red light.”

There was more back and forth. “If you’re going to give me a ticket, give me a ticket,” said Moats.

“Your attitude says that you need one.”

“All I’m asking you is just to hurry up.”

Powell began a lecture. “If you want to keep this going, I’ll just put you in handcuffs,” he said, “and I’ll take you to jail for running a red light.” Powell made several more points, including that the SUV was illegally parked. Moats replied “Yes sir” to each.

“Understand what I can do,” Powell concluded. “I can tow your truck. I can charge you with fleeing. I can make your night very difficult.”

“I understand,” Moats responded. “I hope you’ll be a great person and not do that.”

Hospital security guards arrived and told Powell that the Moatses’ relative really was upstairs dying. Powell spent several minutes inside his squad car, in part to check Moats for outstanding warrants. He found none. Another hospital staffer came out and spoke with a Plano police officer who had arrived.

“Hey, that’s the nurse,” the Plano officer told Powell. “She said that the mom’s dying right now, and she’s wanting to know if they can get him up there before she dies.”

“All right,” Powell replied. “I’m almost done.” (For the complete dialogue between the two, click here.)

As Moats signed the ticket, Powell continued his lecture. “Attitude’s everything,” he said. “All you had to do is stop, tell me what was going on. More than likely, I would have let you go.”

It had been about 13 minutes. Moats and Collinsworth’s father went into the hospital, where they found Collinsworth had died, with her daughter at her side.

The Moatses, who are black, said Wednesday that they can’t help but think that race might have played a part in how Powell, who is white, treated them.

“I think he should lose his job,” said Ryan Moats, a Dallas native who attended Bishop Lynch High School and now plays for the Houston Texans.

White Woman Only Wants To Rent To White People

NIAGARA FALLS—Two days after a man was sentenced to probation and community service for putting up a sign as a “joke” in a public works garage that said “whites only” on a drinking fountain, city police were called to a home in the 600 block of 25th Street on Sunday to investigate another racially charged sign.

This one was clearly no joke.

No charges were filed Sunday, but police told the woman she must take down the handwritten sign on a fence on her property saying, “I rent three bedrooms [at her address to] white people Niagara Falls.” woman agreed to take down the sign under protest. The officer said the woman already had seven more signs she was planning to hang up. [source]

The 53-year-old woman told police she put up the sign after someone tried to break into her house and added, “I can do what I want. I live in America,” according to a police report.

Not Another One! Education Official Resigns Over Racist Obama Emails

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (WPIX) -- A Staten Island man who was appointed to an Education Department parent council resigned Tuesday after admitting he forwarded racist emails.

Borough President James Molinaro called up Salvatore Ballarino and asked the education official to resign because his conduct, according to Molinaro, was "inappropriate and unacceptable as my appointee."

According to the New York Post, the email contained a series of photos showing then-Senator Barack Obama and John McCain during a Presidential debate with invented dialogue, including one that refers to black men hanging from a tree and equating black babies to excrement.

Ballarino then forwarded the emails to dozens of co-workers and people active in Staten Island politics, the report said.

Upon hearing news about Ballarino's resignation, NAACP National Committee leader Tammy Greer Brown said "Great, good, great! Thank you for leaving."

As for Ballarino, he told the Post the email was just one of hundreds containing jokes that he forwards to friends and co-workers.

"So what's the big deal?" he said. "I have plenty of black friends and plenty of black people I think the world of."

CALIFORNIA MAYOR SENDS OUT RACIST EMAIL TOWARDS OBAMA ... FORCED TO APOLOGIZE!!!

Apparently Mayor Grose thought it would be funny to send out a racist Obama email to local businesspeople. Too bad, he didn’t realize that one of the people he sent the message to was African American - Keyanus Price.

Here’s how it’s being reported:

"I was horrified when I read that e-mail," Price said. "What I'm concerned about is how can this person send an e-mail out like this and think it is OK?"

Being a public official, Price said, made the matter worse.

"He's putting the city into a bad place, and he is a liability," Price wrote in an e-mail.

Rupert Murdoch Apologizes For Cartoon: "The Buck Stops With Me"

As the Chairman of the New York Post, I am ultimately responsible for what is printed in its pages. The buck stops with me.


Last week, we made a mistake. We ran a cartoon that offended many people. Today I want to personally apologize to any reader who felt offended, and even insulted.

Over the past couple of days, I have spoken to a number of people and I now better understand the hurt this cartoon has caused. At the same time, I have had conversations with Post editors about the situation and I can assure you - without a doubt - that the only intent of that cartoon was to mock a badly written piece of legislation. It was not meant to be racist, but unfortunately, it was interpreted by many as such.

We all hold the readers of the New York Post in high regard and I promise you that we will seek to be more attuned to the sensitivities of our community.

NEWS BIT: BLACK HISTORY MONTH AD CAUSES A STIR

Acme Markets’ recent Black History Month circular has sparked quite the debate. The company has run the advertisement for seven years and says there has never been an issue before, but the ad is now being called racist.

Products advertised include corn bread, collard greens and grape soda. The Delaware chapter of the NAACP says more than 100 people have complained that the products perpetuate stereotypes: “It’s racist, it’s insensitive, it’s not culturally correct. Don’t assume that to celebrate Black History Month that we must have corn bread. Whoever put this ad together thought it’d be a good joke,” said Delaware NAACP President Cecil C. Wilson who demands Acme run a full-page apology in “all of Delaware’s newspapers”.


In a statement from Acme, the company said the advertisement was designed to highlight Black History Month and many of the items are products supplied through the company’s “supplier diversity program”.

“For example, Glory Foods, an African American-owned manufacturer, is featured with four of its products because it is our way of supporting and strengthening their brand with added exposure during the month of February,” the statement said.

Wilson also said Acme shouldn’t be discounting any foods specifically because it’s Black History Month. In Colonial times, slave owners would discard the remains of butchered hogs, and slaves would cook and season those parts, such as chitterlings and feet, into delicacies. The Acme ad took on a similar theme, Wilson said, by discounting Acme soda and maple syrup instead of the brand-name counterparts.

“This whole thing is cheapo,” he said. “All the products on sale are typically low-grade products that they have to clean off the shelves. I don’t know what their motive is, but it still reeks with suspicion.” [SOURCE]

DAVID DUKE LASHES OUT AGAINST MICHAEL STEELE: Former klansman calls new GOP leader 'black racist' and 'Obama Jr.'

Former KKK grand wizard David Duke, who once ran for governor of Louisiana, has called the newly appointed chairman of the Republican Party a "black racist," reports WDSU.com.

On Friday, GOP leaders voted former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele into the party's leadership post. Steele is the first African-American to hold that position.

Duke described those who supported the move as "traitorous," and cited Steele's positions on gun control, affirmative action and the death penalty in a sometimes rambling condemnation posted on his personal Web site.

"I think the insanity of nominating 'Mr. Amnesty' John McCain and now this black racist will lead to insurgency in the Republican ranks," Duke said. He further referred to Steele as "Obama Jr." and a "servile dog of Israel."

Duke has been largely off the mainstream political radar for years and no longer lives in Louisiana, He remains politically active, speaking largely to a fractional segment of the spectrum, WDSU.com report

WATCHDOG GROUP WANTS BLACKS TO BOYCOTT EBAY: African-Americans and Catholics urged to join forces against racist e-commerce sites.

Just days after the inauguration of America's first black president, Barack Obama, and first Catholic vice-president, Joseph Biden, eBay is hosting items some say is offensive to both groups, and most of the nation.

Items for sale include "coon" songs, a piece of piano music entitled "n-----" blues, anti-Catholic post cards and tracts from the Ku Klux Klan, and even the bones of Catholic saints.

"As America moves into a new era of race relations, we find eBay catering to those stuck in the worst part of our country's past," said Thomas J. Serafin, president of the International Crusade for Holy Relics (ICHR) and the Apostolate for Holy Relics (AHR).

Serafin has been fighting eBay's offensive sales for nearly a decade. Most recently the AHR sent a representative to address an international meeting of diplomats in Washington, DC. There members of the International Catholic Diplomatic Society of St. Gabriel from around the world were briefed on some of the abuses commonly found on eBay.

"African Americans and Catholics now have members in the two highest profile positions in the United States," said Serafin, "and if eBay won't respect us, perhaps they will respect us when we take our dollars elsewhere. It is beyond belief to think that a high tech company like this can't run a software program to police its own site. That couldn't eat into the profit margin that much, so we are left to wonder if it's just a matter of a lack of respect."

Ya Think: 80% of People Stopped In NYC are BLACK or LATINO!

The NYPD is on pace to stop and question a record half a million citizens this year - about 80% of them black or Latino, a new report says.

The Center for Constitutional Rights, citing NYPD data obtained in a suit, said the vast majority of those stopped and questioned in 2005 through June 2008 weren't charged with any crime.

In 2007, for instance, the last complete year of data, cops arrested only 5.8% of the 472,096 people they stopped (27,632).

"The New York City Police Department continues to prey on African-American and Latino communities in New York City,"Vincent Warren, executive director of the Center for Constitutional Rights, said.

The center obtained half of the 2008 data but projected that 543,982 people will be stopped in the entire year if the NYPD maintained its pace.

Cops made fewer than 400,000 stops in 2005.

"The problem actually is getting worse," CCR lawyer Darius Charneysaid.

Commissioner Paul Browne, the NYPD's chief spokesman, said the number of minorities who were singled out under the policy is consistent with overall descriptions by race provided by victims and surviving witnesses of crime.

He pointed to a RAND Corp. study that found no racial profiling in its examination, "and warned against the kind of simplistic comparisons made by the center."

"Their assertions do not constitute a study of the data, but a restatement of accusations in its lawsuit," he added.

St. John's University student David Ourlicht, 21, sees it differently. He was stopped on the street three times by cops - once at gunpoint - and never charged with a crime.

The Manhattanite, who is half black and half white, was among 1 million people snagged in the NYPD's stop-and-frisk net since 2005, data released Thursday show.

"It's something that I have to deal with every day," Ourlicht said. "I can't trust the people that are supposed to protect me and that's scary." With Benjamin Lesser

Detroit's top lawyer resigns after calling court 'ghetto'

DETROIT -- The city's top lawyer resigned Thursday night after she told an official with the 36th District Court that it was "acting like a ghetto court."

Kathleen Leavey, who is white, made the comment Wednesday to a court administrator, Constance Allen, but she said it was misinterpreted.

Leavey, Allen and Dennis Mazurek, the city's chief assistant corporation counsel, were talking about a $400,000 judgment recently decided against the city, but Leavey said the conversation branched into the overall performance of the court.

"I called it that because of the way they treat people," Leavey said, speaking in part of the long lines for service that are common in the court. "They treat people poorly ... whether you are black or white. You just get less service than you get in the suburbs. It's just a bad situation."

"She (the administrator) interpreted it as racist. That's not what I am."

"There was nothing I could do to explain. They just concluded it was racist."

Chief District Judge Marilyn Atkins contacted Deputy Mayor Saul Green about the comment Thursday, Leavey said, the same day Atkins sent a scathing letter regarding the comment to Leavey and other city officials, including all the court's judges. Green asked to her resign, Leavey said. Leavey said she has not talked with Mayor Kenneth Cockrel Jr.

Atkins said in the letter that she was offended.

"How dare you! Not only are your words insulting and racist to this court and the entire city, but they are highly unprofessional coming from the highest ranking attorney for the City of Detroit," Atkins wrote. "You should really think before you speak, especially when referring to this court -- a predominantly African American court in a predominantly African American city with an African American about to become president."

NEWS: BART OFFICER ARRESTED!

Former Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) officer Johannes Mehserle, who SHOT OSCAR J. GRANT III, appeared in the East Fork Justice Court on Wednesday in Minden, Nevada.

Mehserle waived extradition to California and was being held without bail on a warrant charging homicide. According to reports, Mehserle was in Nevada because he feared for his safety after death threats were made against him.

Grant’s family has filed a $25 million legal claim against BART, signaling an intention to sue for damages. The family’s attorney, John Burris, said that he was pleased to hear of Mehserle’s arrest.

In Senegal, bleaching your skin is seen as a way to get ahead.
In richer countries people are increasingly comfortable, and successful, regardless of their natural skin color, but in many African countries like Senegal, trying to change one's skin color is still seen as a way to get ahead.

"Some Senegalese women," Emilie, a student at Dakar University, told ABC News, "are trying to look like the white girls they see on television."

From ads on highway billboards, to little stands in marketplaces, skin bleaching products are almost everywhere.

They sell well, despite what public health officials say are grave risks of using them, including cancer.

The cheapest creams cost around $5 per tube, a small fortune in Senegal, and they are also among the most dangerous.

At a market in Dakar, a young hairdresser who was unwilling to reveal her name told ABC News she had used the creams. "It's more beautiful to have lighter skin. A bit lighter, it's a bit better," she said.

Canadian Public Television Show Makes Racist Jokes About Obama

MONTREAL, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. has been flooded with complaints about a year-end comedy show that made racial slurs about U.S. President-elect Barack Obama.
The publicly funded French-language broadcaster's annual "Bye Bye" comedy television show drew more than 4 million viewers, but also 1,300 complaints about the racial references, Sun Media reported.

In one segment, a comedian said having a black person in the White House "will make it much easier to shoot him" because of the color contrast. It continued with comments that all blacks look alike and a phony interviewer asking a black man if blacks have large genitals, the report said.

In a statement in response to the avalanche of protests, Sylvain Lafrance, executive vice president of CBC/Radio-Canada French Services, acknowledged things went too far.

"Were we overly lenient in the case of the latest 'Bye Bye?' The answer we've been receiving from the public is a resounding yes, and we've taken note," he said.

NEWS: Protestors Demand Justice In Oakland Police Subway Shooting

Protesters wear signs on their backs that say ‘don’t shoot’ during a demonstration at the Fruitvale BART station Wednesday in Oakland, California.

Oscar Grant was fatally shot in the back by a Bay Area Rapid Transit (B.A.R.T.) police officer early on New Year’s morning after police responded to reports of fighting on a train.

Protests, which began peacefully erupted shortly after Oscar Grant was laid to rest on Wednesday night.

According to CNN, the Oakland Police Department made 105 arrests, including a mass arrest of about 80 people at 11 p.m., said Officer Jeff Thomason. The charges include inciting a riot, vandalism, assault on a police officer and unlawful assembly, he said. One officer was injured, but not seriously, Thomason said.

O.J. SIMPSON TO FACE ALL-WHITE JURY: Former NFL star tries to avoid life in prison on kidnapping and armed robbery charges.

*The fate of O.J. Simpson will be in the hands of an all-white jury of 12 when opening arguments begin today in his trial on kidnapping and armed robbery charges in Las Vegas.


The selection process began back in mid-August when 500 prospective jurors filled out a 26-page questionnaire. The judge wanted to be sure that jurors would not be biased against Simpson, who is African-American, and was acquitted of the 1994 slaying of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman, both of whom were white.


"If you are here thinking you are going to punish Mr. Simpson for what happened in Los Angeles in 1995 this is not the case for you," said Clark County District Judge Jackie Glass last Monday, according to the Associated Press. "I mean really, truly, folks. I'm not kidding around. Can you put that aside and understand that the case we are trying here and the info you're going to hear about here is totally separate from that case?"


Simpson, 61, faces 12 faces life in jail on charges stemming from a confrontation in a hotel room in September 2007 after which he and a gang of gun-toting cohorts left with pillow cases stuffed full of sports memorabilia. In the state of Nevada, kidnapping and armed robbery both carry potential life sentences.

7 News obtains copy of racist sign

7 News has obtained a copy of the racist sign that was posted at a Niagara Falls Department of Public Works garage. The sign, reading: "Whites Only Water Fountain" was posted by a drinking fountain and discovered by an employee during an overnight shift at a DPW garage. The director of public works says they are now conducting an internal investigation.

"In this case, I will absolutely go to every avenue and every strength that I have to see that this individual will never even have the opportunity to do anything like this again," said Director of the Niagara Falls Department of Public Works David Kinney. "Its not going to be something that is brushed under the rug, and I'm going to pursue it to its fullest degree."

The Niagara Falls mayor and city administrator also added that the city has a zero tolerance for discrimination. Community leaders are now speaking out.

"I thought that it was very unfortunate that we live in the year 2008 and people would still do something like that," said Pastor Cassandra Salter-Smith from St. James United Methodist Church. "I just couldn't believe it. It just took me back to the 1950's and 1960's where you had white water fountains and black water fountains, or white swimming pools and black swimming pools. It just took me back to that era and its not a good thing."

The DPW is still unsure who placed the racist sign by the water fountain and the case remains under investigation.
